On December 20, 2016, BMW recalled 3,506 BMW M6. Bmw of north america, llc (bmw) is recalling certain model year 2017 bmw 640i, 640i xdrive, 650i, 650i xdrive, m6, 535i, 535i xdrive, 430i, 430i xdrive, 440i, 440i xdrive, m4, x1 sdrive28i, x1 xdrive28i, i3, i8, rolls-royce dawn, mini clubman cooper, clubman cooper s, cooper all4, cooper s all4, mini 4-door cooper, cooper s, mini 2-door cooper, cooper s, john cooper works and 2016 bmw 528i, 528i xdrive, 535i, 535i xdrive, 550i, 550i xdrive, m5 and 535d vehicles. the affected vehicles have seat- mounted side air bag inflator initiators that may fail to ignite during a crash.

The air bags mounted in the sides of the front seats may not deploy when needed in an accident due to a failure of the igniters within the air bag assemblies. This would increase risk of occupant injury in a crash.

Recall repairs on your BMW or Mini vehicle must be performed by a BMW or Mini dealership, respectively. BMW and Mini will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in February, 2017. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local BMW or Mini dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

The drive shaft that propels engine power to the rear wheels could fracture due to a manufacturing flaw. This could allow the vehicle to roll when parked, and would fail to power the rear wheels while driving, which could cause an accident.

On certain 2013 M series vehicles, the oil pump can fail, causing a loss of oil pressure and in some cases, the engine to stall. 

BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles during October of 2012. If you experience abnormal noise from the engine, the low oil pressure warning system is active, or you don't receive notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer. It’s helpful to have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.
