What is your question?
Can the AC compressor be bypassed? If so, would you by chance know what size belt would be required for the task?

Hey David, This is one of those types of jobs that will require a bit of trial and error. It's unlikely you can even do this, but I've never tried so it may be possible. You'll need to try several different belts. What's wrong with your A/C Compressor?
Hi, DavidBlair - Have you already found a way to resolve your issues? If your problem is still unsolved, I know how to get the correctly sized belt you need to bypass the A/C compressor along the drive belt route. I'd be happy to help you, as I was faced with this same problem myself and managed to get the right belt for it. Feel free to contact me at ALACSLUAP@YAHOO.COM if I can assist. Thanks!
I have a 2001 dodge grand caravan sport that has the same grinding issue. I cannot find a replacement pulley for that year, and need to know if I can use a smaller belt, and what size. If you can help, that would be great ! Thanks!!
Thanks anyway! I Actually replaced the compressor and recharged the system. There was really no way to bypass it. I thought I had found a way but the belt rubbed against one of the pulleys and quickly started smoking so I aborted the mission and fixed the car properly and considering the temperature at the time a much cooler and happier customer I had.
RE: Short Serpentine Belt for 1998 and earlier Yes, the S70/ V70 Volvo has a standard short belt that bi passes the A/C on the 1998 s70 . It works on many of the earlier models as well. If you look it up its shorter at 50 inches or so instead of the usual 70 + one. Its only ribbed on one side and thats fine. I have a 2000 S70 and you will find several stories of the short belt not working. The 2000 S70 model (and v70 and c70) needs the electrical connection to the A/C compressor to electrically work, to tell the alternator to produce power. Otherwise your dead as soon as the battery dies with the alternator flashing. I purchased a used A/C for $110 , with one inch left on the supply and return tubes. I could not get the connectors off and really did not want to pressureixe the system anyhow. Its got shards in there now, the whole thing would need to be flushed, screens inserted for all the old equipment. No way. I'm going to pour PAG oil in it and seal the pump so dust does not get in and run it as a pully only. The install time was 4 hours. If you try the short belt on the 2000 or newer model do not get lost on all the other reports of electrical issues. I know the engines are the same, that is why I tried it too. The short belt does not work from 2000 to the present. You need a working COMPRESSOR, you don't have to have refrigerant to it! But you need a working non cooked up COMPRESSOR to report to the cars computer to send the signal to the alternator to work. Lesson learned the very hard way.
how would i know what kind of belt to start with to find the one i need
It's purely a guess based on an examination of the remaining pulleys. This requires quite a bit of mechanical ability and imagination, if you really want to do this take it to a repair shop that can examine this and see if it's possible. http://repairpal.com/directory?address=30093&car_brand_names=Volvo
