Windshield wipers have total mind of thier own. Why?

When I turn windshield wipers on they will wipe once and then stop. I go up to the next speed it'll do it again a couple times and stop and randomly wipe again when it pleases but if I go straight to high it works just fine.but get this.... One day i open my truck door to get in and they went off I hadn't started it I hadn't hadn't even been in the truck yet just open the door and they wiped across then down and that was it...what is going on?

What makes this problem better or worse?

Nothing in particular its constant.

How long has your 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 had this problem?
