Why will car will show a fault code but nothing is wrong.

What is your question?

A fault code will show up but nothing is wrong. Drivers window stop working but mechanic says nothing is wrong. He says I need a software update. What type of software update can fix this problem and do you do it? If so, how much? I know its not the maps update.
