why is my transmission stuck in 2nd gear

i have an automatic transmission and wen i put into drive it will drive off in 1st gear then shift to 2nd gear fine but after that is will not shift to 3rd gear and will not shift back down to 1st gear it will just stay in 2nd gear till i put it in neutral or park then it will go back down to 1st gear

How long has your 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 had this problem?
