Why does my car continue to over heat even after a new thermostat replacement?

My car has been leaking antifreeze for about 3 months. I was told that the thermostat and housing and thermostat gaskets had went bad and was causing my anitfreeze to leak. Everytime it does over heat it drains the overflow tank. I have replaced the thermostat but another mechanic advised the gaskets did not need to be replaced. Now my car continues to overheat. Not so much, but when it does it still drains the overflow. Was this mechanic wrong perhaps I needed the gaskets or is there a bigger issue at hand?
