What is your question?
I am trying to diagnose the issue with my ac compressor. It is not actuating on its own. It is operating when the relay is overridden, using the paperclip method. The relay is good, however it is not getting a ground signal. If I am understanding correctly this would mean that either the ac compressor is low on refrigerant (which could also mean a leak), or there is an issue with a high or low-pressure switch. I located the pressure switch on the high line but am not sure where the low-pressure switch is. I tried looking up schematics and the manual, but again only seeing the high-pressure switch. If there is anything else I should be looking at, or you need more information please let me know. 2014 Subaru Crosstrek XV, gas only

Hi this is Dusty, I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team! I did a little research on your Subaru's A/C system, the pressure switch used is actually a triple pressure switch (High, Middle, Low), in their documentation it's just called 'Pressure Switch' which can be a bit deceiving. These aren't super common (in my experience) to failure, it's usually something else. With this knowledge I would advise against manually commanding the compressor on, with the pressure sensor having a wider range it's very likely that it's doing its job and protecting the compressor. With that being said, I would recommend having your A/C diagnosed professionally. Adding refrigerant when there's no indication of how much is left remaining, can lead to overcharging, which lands us where we started. They'll have the tools and equipment to properly recover any remaining refrigerant from the vehicle, and the knowledge to pinpoint the issue and make the necessary repairs.
