This is sometimes discribed as engine makes a hooting noise through the air cleaner assembly at times. When making the noise, try unplugging the Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid. If the noise is gone, replace the IAC solenoid.

We have a 2000 Mazda MPV that made the same noise and it was a design flaw with the IAC. It only happened when it was cold but drove us nuts!
