What is the towing capacity

Mitsubishi says the towing capacity is 2300 lbs. That is the total trailer and load weight. Keep in mind the vehicle's curb weight empty is 3510 lbs, the gross vehicle weight rating (GVW) is 4730 lbs. This allows for 1220 lbs weight load on the Montero. Any trailer will have a "tongue load". This is the downward weight placed on the tow vehicle by the trailer when the two are connected. As a general rule a trailer will transfer 10% of it's total weight onto the tongue. This weight needs to be considered in GVW. Something like this: load capacity is about 1220 lbs. towing capacity is 2300 lbs. if the full tow capacity is used then 230 lbs is added to vehicle load leaving only 990 lbs for driver/passengers/gear in the Montero itself.
