What else should I check before having head gasket changed?

Guilty- I ignored "oil light" approx 4 months. From one day to next car began to overheat. I had the thermastat changed and that took care of problem for approx 2 weeks. Car will run approx 10-15min then it's in the red zone. I've been told I need to change the head gasket. Approx cost of repairs is between $1,000 to $1,200. Is there anything else I should have checked out before putting half the value of car back in it with this type of repair.. Thanks. ~Sylvia~

it could be the head gasket, then again, it could be the
fan clutch, or the auxiliary fan, or a blocked radiator
or a water pump with a slipping impeller. if this is just
an everyday auto shop, I think I'd get another opinion.
you really really need a good BMW tech to look at all these things before going in to the deep end of the pool.
BTW, the price sounds too cheap, cuz it will need a valve
job while the head is off; more like $1800 up.
