What causes the cruise control to work and then just stop working while driving?

Cruise control starts working, then just quits while driving, sometimes it can be reset other times it will not work again until the car is turned off. This last trip it stopped and after 2 shutdowns, it still didn't work. No button pushing or resetting had any effect. I also had similar problems with the rear window wiper, did an intermittent wipe, did it twice more, then it would not shut off until stopping the car and turning off the car. No button pushing had any effect. Is there any master electronic reset that can be done?
