The hear/AC vents no longer work, only the defrost vents. The vacuum line (which we repaired before) is the cause since it is broken in the engine compartment. We can see it, but we cannot see where it enters the firewall so do not know how to replace it thru the wall and into the vacuum diaphragm for the under-dash components. Help?

Can you just replace the broken section of vacuum hose in the engine compartment in order to restore proper operation of the A/C system in your 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee? If you must replace the complete vacuum hose you may find that the vacuum hose follows the routing of the main wire harness through the firewall. Replacing the complete vacuum hose might not be as easy as it sounds.
Of course it was not possible to repair the vacuum line in the engine compartment, as it was broken into the firewall. What we could not find was where it went into the firewall to pick it up from there. Later, we learned that it enters the passenger side alongside the main air conditioning lines. Nonetheless we rerouted to enter near the far left hand wire harness entry, then reconnected inside to the vacuum diaphragm. It works. Thanks much for you helpful input. You are right...it was a challenge! !
