I have a problem with my 2001 Grand Marquis transmission not shifting properly. The car sat up for a couple of months and the transmission now will not easily shift into lower gears to pass. Going down hill or level it will finally shift. What do I need to do?

An evalutaiton of the electronic controls of the transmission are in order, including the throttle position sensor, for one thing. Engine performance can cause erratic shifting too. Start by checking the processor for any existing failure codes. Then a road test with a monitor hooked up should be performed to see what gear is desired by the processor, and what gear is actually engaged.
