How would i test the cmp to know if it's good or bad

The most reliable test is with an oscilloscope. Much like a doctor would monitor your heart on an EKG machine, technicians monitor signals from engine sensors with a similar machine (oscilloscope). You can check the resistance with an ohm meter if you have a specification for the sensor, but this will very rarely uncover a bad sensor.
