What is your question?
I have a 1996 Chev. 1500 with a 5.7 liter engine with 162,000 miles. The speedometer and tachometer having been working erratically. It starts working good and then after a few minutes the needles start jumping aroung and the quit working. The speedometer and tripometer will quit working. Then the vehicle will start off in second instead of first. The other gauges continue to work. I brought it to a mechanic and he had the instrument control panel taken out and sent off for diagnosis. The reply was that there no problem with the panel. The mechanic then said it was most likely an internal transmission problem. Any ideas and on probable cause(s) and solution(s)?

I think you have electrical problems causing the tach and speedo to malfunction and that the trans starts in second (default mode?) reinforces my idea. Get your vehicle to a GM specialist or an electrical shop. Here's a directory link for you: http://repairpal.com/chevrolet-repair-in-maringouin-louisiana
had the same problem on my 98 chevy pickup 5.7, was showing transmission codes , transmission was fine came to be ignition switch, switch cost about 200.00. check gauges, and service engine soon light was showing. codes are not always right be careful.there,s been a few of us with this same problem around the country. tranny my ass. lol. it will cause your transmission to not shift right dam ignition switch. good luck
I have a 98 Silverado the speedometer odometer rpm and gas gauge not working started having shifting problems now its making noises like its jumping in and out of gear wuld the ignition switch make it sound so awful like the tranny is bad
the ignition switch was the problem in my truck. a remote start alrm system shorted out and damaged ignition switch harness.
I just had that problem with my 1995 GMC Sierra it ended up being the ignition switch
Thank you very much. I had a similar reply from another mechanic yesterday stating that it is most likely an electrical probem.
What did you end up replacing and how much did you pay?
