Sound of some kind of motor turning on and off priodically under the left side of hood

It goes off and on about every half hour or so...sometimes even after the ignition is turned off Vehicle has 94000 miles. It doesn't interfere with any function...I have been told it's just a fan motor and it's normal...but I don't think it is that. I have owned the car since it had 23000mi and it didn't do that till the last couple of years.
