Slave cylinder went out no warning should my check engine light come on?

I was driving up the mountain when my clutch suddenly failed with no warning. It still turns on and runs but won’t engage into any gears or reverse. The mechanic said my whole clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder are bad. My check engine light never came on either. Literally no warning. Is this a drive train issue? Is this normal? I come from a family with mechanics and it doesn’t make sense to anyone. I’m extremely anal about how I drive my car. I have a warranty through CarMax and they are trying to deny the claim.
