I can buy a complete new kit for $313.40 on eBay with free shipping and a one-year warranty. I should then be able to get everything done(parts plus labor)for about $400, right? I would think a reputable mechanic wouldn't mind installing the kit I take to him with my car.

It's hard to really know until you get everything you need. And then - you don't really know the quality of the parts. A mechanic needs to feel confident in the parts being installed...many wouldn't be willing to install parts of unknown origin. Last - you won't get a warranty from your mechanic even though your part may have one. I would be wary if it was me. Last - what is the cause of needing the compressor replaced? And - you will need more than $87 to cover labor, refrigerant and compressor oil...
The kit supposedly is new and covers everything---but I'll check it out thoroughly after reading your response. Thanks, Dave Ryneaux
