Passenger Air Bag Inflator Ruptures During Deployment Spraying Metal Fragments

Recall Details

The passenger frontal air bag inflator may rupture on deployment, causing metal fragments to come through the air bag and injure occupants. As a final remedy, dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The passenger frontal air bag assembly is deployed by an inflator which contains propellant that makes the air bag deploy. This propellant may degrade over time, especially when exposed to humidity and temperature cycling. As a result, the inflator may rupture on deployment, which can send metal shrapnel through the air bag, striking vehicle occupants. This could result in serious injury or death. This recall makes a final repair where an interim remedy was previously performed.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your Mitsubishi must be performed by a Mitsubishi dealership. Mitsubishi will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in April, 2018. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Mitsubishi dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

Summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2004-2006 Mitsubishi Lancer vehicles that previously received a like-for-like passenger side frontal air bag inflator under recall 15V321 as interim remedy. Also recalled are 2004-2006 Lancer vehicles located in Guam or Saipan that previously received or never received a new inflator under 15V321 or 17V569. These passenger side frontal air bag inflators may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to explode in the event of an air bag deployment.
Consequence
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
Remedy
MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will install a final replacement passenger side frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 26, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-005.
