Recall 17V821000

Transmission Shift Lever Can Be Moved Out Of Park Without Depressing Brake Pedal Or Without Key

Recall Details

The transmission shift lever interlock may stick in the open position, allowing movement of the shift lever from the park position without depressing the brake pedal and without an key in the ignition in the on position. Dealers will make repairs (the repair procedure is not available as of the time of this writing) free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The transmission shift lever should not be able to be moved from the locked park position without depressing the brake pedal with the key in the ignition in the "on" position. On some affected vehicles, the brake transmission shift interlock mechanism may stick in the "open" position. If this happens, the shift lever will release from the park position without depressing the brake and without the key in the ignition on position. This could cause the vehicle to roll away unexpectedly and result in injury.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your Ram truck must be performed by a Ram dealership. Chrysler will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in February, 2018. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Ram dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with. The Chrysler recall number is T79.

Summary
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs, 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, 2009-2017 Ram 1500 and 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.
Consequence
Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

The remedy for this recall is still under development. The recall is expected to begin February 8, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T79.
