Recall 17V094000

Driveshaft Loosens And Strikes Fuel Tank

Recall Details

The driveshaft was installed on the vehicle without a catch strap which protects it from damaging under body components in the event the shaft loosens. Dealers will install a driveshaft catch strap free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The driveshaft was manufactured without having a catch strap to secure it to the undercarriage. As a result, if the driveshaft loosens, it could strike the fuel tank, causing a fuel leak and a fire hazard.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your Sprinter must be performed by a Sprinter dealership. Daimler Vehicles USA will notify known owners of affected vehicles (a timetable of this notification is not available as of the time of this writing.) If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Sprinter dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

Potential Number of Units Affected

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2015 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured without a driveshaft catch strap, allowing a loose driveshaft to strike the fuel tank. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 301, "Fuel System Integrity."
A loose driveshaft may strike and puncture the gas tank, resulting in a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will install a driveshaft catch strap, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267.
