Recall 17V093000

Air Bag Control Unit Malfunctions In An Accident

Recall Details

The air bag control unit was not secured with a reinforcement plate and protective bracket when installed in the vehicle. This would result in the control unit possibly becoming non-functional in the event of an accident, preventing proper air bag deployment. Dealers will install a reinforcement plate and protective bracket around the air bag control unit free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The air bag control unit that operates and deploys the air bags in an accident may become inoperative during an accident. This could prevent some or all of the air bags from deploying as needed in an accident, increasing risk of occupant injury.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your Sprinter must be performed by a Sprinter dealership. Daimler Vehicles USA will notify known owners of affected vehicles (a timetable of this notification is not available as of the time of this writing.) If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Sprinter dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2013-2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans. These vehicles were manufactured without a reinforcement plate and protective bracket on the air bag control unit. As a result, the air bag control unit may not remain functional after the initial impact, possibly preventing additional air bags from deploying in response to a secondary impact.
Consequence
If additional air bags do not deploy as intended, the occupants are at an increased risk of injury.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will install a reinforcement plate and protective bracket around the air bag control unit, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267.
Notify
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
