Recall 16V833000

Brake Warning Lamp Does Not Illuminate During Vehicle Start Up

Recall Details

The brake warning light will not illuminate during initial key on start up bulb function check. Dealers will correct the instrument cluster software as needed free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The brake warning light in the instrument cluster does not light up as it should when the key is first turned on. Because of this, the driver may not be able to confirm that the brake light will come on when it should, when a brake concern occurs or when the parking brake is engaged. This could increase risk of a crash.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your Sprinter must be performed by a Dodge dealership. Daimler Vehicles USA will notify known owners of affected vehicles (a timetable of this notification is not available as of the time of this writing.) If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Dodge dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain model year 2003-2006 Dodge and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans manufactured June 30, 2003, to August 31, 2006. The instrument cluster on the affected vehicles fails to illuminate the BRAKE warning lamp in the instrument cluster during the vehicle start up bulb-function check. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems."
Consequence
Without the BRAKE lamp illuminating during the vehicle start up bulb-function check, the driver has no confirmation that the lamp is working and therefore may not know whether or not the lamp will illuminate if the brake fluid level is low. If the operator is unaware that the vehicle has low brake fluid, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and DVUSA and Dodge dealers will correct the instrument cluster software, as necessary, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-770-705-2070.
Notify
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
