Front Universal Joint In Drive Train Fails

Recall Details

The front drive shaft universal joint may corrode and fail. Dealers will replace the front drive shaft free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The front drive shaft universal joint may not seal out water and debris properly, resulting in premature wear and damage to the joint. This could cause the joint to fail, resulting in the front wheels not be driven as needed. This could also damage other nearby components, as the joint detaches.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your BMW must be performed by a BMW dealership. BMW will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in July, 2016. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local BMW dealerships. They will also check for any other uncompleted recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

The affected vehicles have a front driveshaft universal joint that may not seal out water and debris from getting in and damaging the joint, which could lead to its failure.
Consequence
If the front universal joint fails, the front wheels would not be driven, affecting vehicle traction. Additionally, continued driving of the vehicle with a broken front universal joint may damage other components. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driveshaft, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on July 1, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
