THIS COULD LEAD TO EARLY BEARING FAILURE AND ULTIMATELY TO AXLE SHAFT FRACTURE. IN THE EVENT OF AXLE SHAFT FRACTURE, THE VEHICLE WOULD LOSE DRIVE FUNCTION AND WOULD COAST TO A STOP. LOSS OF DRIVE FUNCTION COULD LEAD TO A CRASH.
Vehicles subject to chassis overloading may experience premature rear wheel bearing failure. This could ultimately lead to axle shaft fracture. In the event of axle fracture, the vehicle would lose drive function and would coast to a stop. Loss of drive function could lead to a crash. Dealers will replace the wheel bearings, seals, and axle shafts to correct this concern. The Ford recall number is 04S16.
Ford Motor Company will notify owners of affected vehicles beginning July 15 2004. If you commonly carry heavy loads or hear any abnormal noise from the rear of the vehicle, or you don't receive notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer. It's helpful to have your vehicle identification number (VIN) when you call.
