My mod selector started blinking next day car will hardly move

one day the arrow on dash started blinking and then on the mod selector as well. I stopped the car as it seemed to be running strange. it drove fine home after that and lights went out, but next day I went to work and it completely will not go it sounds like it is in low low gear it will move from point A to B but is not drive able I never had any problems with the transmission so not sure what is going on. I want to know if someone thinks it could be the mod selector or is it most likely the transmission
What makes this problem better or worse?
it will drive a couple feet when it is cold. but after that it wont drive its like stuck
