Grinding sound when the AC or heater is turned on

What is your question?

Ok so when I turn my heater or AC on there's a grinding sound plus it bogs the motor down that if I come to a complete stop it sounds like it's gonna die

What makes this problem better or worse?

If I turn it off it runs great
