It sounds like something in the cooling system is not working as designed. You could have a thermostat that is sticking closed, not allowing the engine to be cooled by the coolant, as coolant will not flow with a stuck closed thermostat. You could have internal engine coolant leaks, compromising the ability of the engine to cool properly. Whatever it is, don't drive the car again until you check it out, as you can cause more and more damage if you run the vehicle like this without resolving the problem.
