i am trying to solve this problem with my mother's SUV... the check engine light has come on & off sporadically for about the last two months & each time is says code P0401. i was told by a mechanic friend that is the EGR sensor. from what i am reading here, that is true. the truck is now starting to feel like it will stall out, especially when the A/C is on. he also suggested instead of replacement, which would cost several hundred dollars & take 3 days to get from a dealer who is about 60 miles away, that cleaning would be a solution. i dont know how to do this. does anyone have instructions on how i find the right part, remove it, clean it & reinstall it? thanks for any help !

first of all, you cannot clean a sensor. an egr flow problem could be anyone of 10 separate issues. you need a shop to accurateky diag the code before you throw an expensive part at it that wont fis the problem. it is cheaper to pay the diag for an exact answer. Roy
my friend who has a shop said "EGR sensor". he may have used the wrong term, but the code came out "P0401"... what i have read here, it sounds like it could be cleaned out somehow, but i dont know the procedure.. if you have any guide, that would be a lifesaver ! thank you.
the passages can clog up with carbon and letting less exhaust or intake vaccuum to the valve. remove the valve and look at the passages for restrictions. use a coat hanger or something else flexible to clean it out. I still think that this is not your problem. there is a sensor that is a common failure but you need a scan tool, vaccuum guage and a volt meter to check it. that why i recommended a diag. Roy
