center console will not change air con temps - 06 Subarau Tribeca

We just bought a 166k miles Tribeca. It has been very well looked-after by the same [second] owner who had it for 10+ years. Air con works but we can not change the individual settings from 65 deg only. The dials do not respond to change the temp settings so we have to just turn air con off. Could this be a computer re-set fix? The mechanic seems to think the whole center console needs to be removed to find & fix ...$700 seems to be a rough estimate. Any help would appreciated.
