My sons car makes a rattling noise when he accelerates

It started about a week ago and it makes the noise on acceleration. We have been told it could be the flywheel, but since his car is an automatic it does not have a flywheel, so could it be the flexplate? If so, in order to check it, does the transmission need to come out of the car?
