My 2007 Scion tC won't start after i replaced the bad starter. what should I do.

I hooked up cables to charge the battery to jump it and when I tried to start it it still wouldn't start. It clicks over over like it wants to but there's no electrical current going threw to give it the juice it needs to start. The starter just clicks. So I dropped the clutch to start it and once it started i drove it around to try and charge the batter hit every time I would start to come to a stop the car would sputter like it wanted to die. I checked the ignition fuse and it was still good. Now I'm stuck and don't know what to do. I need help
