my 'check engine' light is not on. but i failed inpection because my car won't reset. two main codes come up as 'not ready'. they are the catalyst and evaporative system codes which still come up as not ready after being adviced to drive for a 1000 miles or more for system to reset which i did.

The EVAP monitor in these cars is notoriously difficult to set, it may take up to 6 drive cycles, with 17 hours between drive cycles for the EVAP I/M System Status Indicator to transition to YES. This is assuming you have no pending codes in the system. The catalyst is not much easier. You car needs a very specific drive cycle to enable the monitors. You can drive it forever, but if those conditions are not met, it won't transition to YES. Some states allow 1 monitor to be NOT READY because of the problems getting them to transition. Check your emission inspection laws to verify this. Your local dealer will probably be able to get the EVAP monitor to transition. All of this assumes that a problem in the systems is preventing the transition. A check for pending codes will verify this.
Great answer from devilscap4. Also, don't fill up the thank to more than 3/4, otherwise the evap test won't even run. The fuel level has to be between 20 and 80% about 1/4 to 3/4. Zee
