What is your question?
I receive messages in my driver information center that are not OBD2 in nature and if I scan using an OBD2 scanner when I receive these messages no codes are found. Most of the messages are specific and when I receive them I am able to go right to the problem and resolve it. However, I have received other messages like Service Vehicle Soon or Service Engine Soon that are not specific and the problem is not obvious. Is it the manufactures intent that the driver go digging and sniffing in an effort to find those problems and fix them or are there defined procedures provided by the manufacture to identify those problems so they can be resolved as with the other problems that were clearly defined when received by the driver?

Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Great question—your Pontiac’s **Driver Information Center (DIC)** messages can be a bit of a puzzle. Unlike OBD-II codes, these messages often come from the car's Body Control Module (BCM) or other subsystems that aren’t always accessible with a basic OBD-II scanner. Messages like **Service Vehicle Soon** typically point to non-engine-related issues, such as electrical problems, lighting faults, or other system malfunctions. GM’s intent wasn’t to have you playing Sherlock Holmes, but without specialized diagnostic tools (like a Tech 2 scanner or equivalent), you’re left with guesswork. The manufacturer does provide detailed troubleshooting procedures in service manuals for each message, but they’re usually aimed at technicians with access to these tools. If you’re repeatedly getting vague warnings, it might be worth investing in a scan tool with extended GM diagnostic capability or heading to a shop with the right equipment. Saves you from sniffing around under the hood unnecessarily! If you need any further advice or want help finding a trusted RepairPal shop in your area, please feel free to call us at 877-913-1554.
