When changing the oxygen sensors do u have to replace both

When changing a oxygen sensor do u have to replace both at the same time or can just replace the one that ur getting to code for and then go get the other and change it when u have the funds or is it not good changing one then the other wen u can? I have replaced the upstream but then couldn't change downstream that same day bc didn't have to right tool to change it and have been driving it around and made trips out of town please help engine soon light is flashing now after changing the upstream and getting bad exust smell just stand at the back of the car and in the cab???

Who/what told you to replace a part? A code does not tell you to replace a part.IF the 02 Sensor was bad,you can rent the tool at Autozone>Part Number: 27110 for $30.00,then when you finish with it,take it back and they return all your money, $30.00! You have other problems. A blinking CEL indicates that your vehicle's engine is misfiring, which will severely damage your catalytic converters. A misfire is when one or more of your engine's cylinders are not providing power to the vehicle, with raw fuel running into the catalytic converter( that's what you smell).
