How do I remove a broken spark plug from the back side of the engine?

Spark plug is broken at the ceramic and the nut has come off.

What makes this problem better or worse?

It's towards the back of the engine compartment, and is difficult to see without a mirror

How long has your 2003 Pontiac Grand Am had this problem?
