multiple times this past 18mo the car has had a no start problem--mechanic has replaced the control modudule for coil and been able to get it running but something must be causing this condition i see a number of things that may cause a no start situation--all have been out of the blue after the car has sat (4 hours or more)does not shut off while running diag. they feel it is electrical any ideas??? need car to last a couple more years !!

There are many, and this does sound like it is an electrical issue. Throughout this ordeal, have you had the check engine light come on, and it so, were there any codes stored? If you can post those it would be a big help. Has the mechanic been able to reproduce the problem? And if so, did they say what part of the system was not working? Ignition? Fuel delivery? Injector operating?
he didn't give me any codes--although i thought that is what he was checking diagnosically---he was pretty much guessing as he hadn't taken the time to trace it all----the module got it running--but i am not willing to spend $$$$$ on a guess esp when you get into the main computer and injectors (which were mentioned) the two areas circled on the diagram he did produce was the fuel injectors and coil and timing control which seem to run off the idle air control valve
i came to the site looking to see if there were simular problems reported and possible ideas to check i am going to take it to someone else to see if they can pull up some codes and put forth some idea but i don't like to go blind and just replace anything and everything for something that may have a simple cause and effect the car is runnning now and may continue--but since we have had this thing happen 4 times in less than two years i figure it probably is not fixed
You are absolutely correct in not wanting to pay for someone to guess to try and fix this. If you have a mechanic that you sense is not trying to diagnose the problem, go to someone else. However, if the problem is intermittent and the mechanic cannot duplicate the complaint, then it is very difficult to diagnose. There are some good GM techs here and hopefully they will have some insight about what this might be, Good Luck!
yes i guess that may be the issue--we may get up in the morning and go to start the car for work and it won't start or...as a couple time the car started fine in the am drove to work and went to leave work at the end of the day and it won't start the first time we changed plugs and wires and i am not even sure what they played with but got it running---the second time it happened we had it towed to the shop but by the time he got to it and went out to start it --it started--(thought we were crazy) now we have had the sensor replaced 2-3 times i know reading the manual some things effect others that you wouldn't think of --some related to the anti theft etc. but have not diagnoised why????
What "sensor" are you referring to? Why was it replaced? When the vehicle wont start, does the engine crank over? If there is an issue with the security system, it may have codes in the control module. Have you tried different ignition keys? Does this happen with all the keys or only one? Has the fuel pump been replaced? What is the fuel level when this occurs? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm trying to narrow down the possibilities.
What "sensor" are you referring to? IGNITION COIL MODULE AND CRANK SENSOR? Why was it replaced?I AM ASSUMING IT WAS THE ONE RECOMMENDED AND IT GOT THE CAR TO START---IT JUST CAME OUT OF THE SHOP AND ONE (OR BOTH) WAS REPLACED UNDER THE WARRANTY (I WAS TOLD) AS IT WASN'T BUT A SHORT TIME AGO THE PROBLEM HAD OCCURRED AND THESE WERE REPLACED A PRETTY PRICE When the vehicle wont start, does the engine crank over?IT WAS CRANKING If there is an issue with the security system, it may have codes in the control module. Have you tried different ignition keys? NO WE ONLY USE THE ONE KEY--KEEP THE OTHER ON THE RING AS SPARE--USE THE REMOTE LOCKING Does this happen with all the keys or only one? Has the fuel pump been replaced? NO What is the fuel level when this occurs? ALWAYS OVER 1/4 TANK--WE DON'T RUN IT BELOW THAT--SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 1/4 AND 1/2 WE FILL IT UP Sorry for all the questions, but I'm trying to narrow down the possibilities
Thanks for all the answers! You may be having an intermittent problem with the fuel pump, but that would need to be verified with a fuel pressure gauge at the time of the no start condition. When was the last time it wouldn't start?
sept 18th is when they replaced both parts--they replaced one or both under warranty when it wouldn't start two weeks ago
