Car broke down while accelerating on the freeway

It hums/grinds when I try and start it, it wont start up and is sitting where the tow truck dropped it off. Any other possibilities?

our 2001 neon did the same thing on 1/30/12. Husband replace the timing belt which was slapped in half, replace the water pump. still no start. I had tried to start it, the engine turns but no spark. I just dropped 4 brand new spark plugs in it too, still no start. could the timing be off since it happen when i was driving on I-80 towards fairfield? Dose this mean he needs to resit the revelotions? my engine is not one that will bent its vaulves. we do not have the funds to take it into a shop, becasue of a sick child that is having a lot of medical testing. Help please! I have to take her in to sac for an ecg on her this coming tuesday and wednsedy, which will be diffult to get by bus since she'll have a medical device connect to body.
