Why is my car overheating?

I am not certain... By the time I was brave enough to check it yesterday - it was dark outside. I thought I would try putting some new coolant in it tonight and test it. I am too chicken to drive it anywhere. I am a single mom of four children so my time and money is very limited so I try and figure out things on my own.
