The mechanic says the alternator belt needs to be replaced so the ac compressor must be replaced as well. We asked about just replacing the belt and he says the AC compressor has to be replaced for the car to work...do you agree? We just had the gasket replaced last week after we had a burning smell and slight smoke when i parked. we had it towed and the mechanic said it was a leaky or broken gasket. Then the battery light came on the next day and then the next day when I left for work when I accelerated the car didn't go faster. I floored it and it wouldn't go any faster.

Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! It sounds like your mechanic says the AC compressor's condition affects the alternator belt because both components share the same belt system. If the AC compressor is seized or damaged, it can cause issues with the belt, impacting the alternator and overall performance. Technically, the car can run without the AC compressor functioning, but if the compressor is seized, it could prevent the belt from spinning other crucial components, like the alternator. So, replacing the compressor might be necessary if it's causing the belt to malfunction.
