Yes, I would have a scan done of the engine to verify the temp level being reached. This is to ensure that your gauge is reading properly. Then I would have a 5 gas analysis done of your radiator gases when the engine is hot, be sure to have the coolant over flow bottle checked as well. Any thing above 50 HCs ppm and .2% CO is a concern. If those readings prove out to be too high then have a chemical block-check run on the radiator neck. What I am checking for here is a leaking head gasket. It is best to rule this in or out first and foremost. let me know and Good Luck!
Take an exhaust gas analyzer that measures HC(Hydro carbons, It could be a 2,4 or 5 gas analyzer. If you have ANY HC in the cooling system you have a blown head gasket/cracked block. Use a noncontact thermometer to check actual engine temp. DO NOT DRIVE THIS ANYMORE.
I'm going to partially disagree with you Mr knowhow, and agree with dandd. "Any" hydrocarbons in not accurate, but over 50ppm is. I agree that the car should not be driven much, but the damage is done, just don't drive if the temperature rises above 3/4 on the gauge.
I've always used a 4 or 5 gas analyzer to check for the presence of hydrocarbons in the cooling system for any vehicle that has overheated or I suspect has a blown head gasket. But to say that "any HC's" in the cooling system means the "you have a blown head gasket/cracked block" is wrong. Would you sell your customer a tear down and inspection of their engine if it had 20 ppm HC's in the cooling system?
Lawrence, use a gas analyzer on you car. if you read any HC in cooling system. That's if you know what one is. Then tell me if you detect any HC's.
I'm sorry I'm such an asshole. YES LAWRENCE!!!!!!!! NO HC's PERIOD!!!! Try it your self. If you do then you need to calibrate the analyzer.
