could an EGR valve cause 1997 maixma to overheat

found out what was the problem ,was driving in 2nd gear automatic vehcle cause the engine to have a knoing sound then vehicle not going anywhere crawling at 5mls per/hr,though it should of been transmission ,mechanic says I blew the engine
