Why does my 96 max shift hard 1st to 2nd gear when the RPMs go past 2000?

Try cleaning your throttle body. Sounds like your TPS sensor is going bad.
Need to check VSS(Vehicle speed sensor), confirm speedometer is working, TCM(transmission control module), ECUEngine control unit), & TPS(throttle position sensor), clean out throttle body.
