replaced starter and seleniod on nissand21 1991 2.4L it started fine 1st and 2nd time then noting.what could it be

the starter that was replaced was really hot why.amecanic said the gear that turns the flywheel was stuck and it never retrivid back like it was suppose to. What seems to make the problem better or worse? when starter is new it starts a couple times then nothing How long have you had this problem? 3weeks
