actually my truck is a 1986 2.4L fuel injected. i changed the timing belt tensioner but had trouble setting the timing. it idles fine and doesnt ping or knock if i slowly give it gas but when i step on the gas it knocks if i can set the timing right will this solve my problem

If it was working fine before the tensioner change then i would definitely suspect timing.Did you check the marks,even a small amount of misadjustment makes a big difference on a motor.did the crank or cams get rotated while the belt tension was loose,locate number 1 cylinder and make sure the piston is at top dead centre,then look at your timing marks .hope this helped a little!Why did you have trouble setting the timing?
yes if u set the timing right it will solve this problem. I too had this same problem with my 1990 nissan pickup when the timing was off. Im now changing the timing cain.
adjust the distributer i had the exact same issue. THAT IS 100% YOUR PROBLEM
thanks for the info. i took it to a mechanic he found 2 cylinders with low compression. so it' s overhaul time or second hand motor.
