Engine just shut off at idle, then starter acting like it was not engaged?

Son said it ran great all day, 101 degrees out, then as he went to put it in park, it shut off, then wouldn't turn over, starter noises like a small grinding shriek, then 10 minutes later started right up and he drove it home, just don't want him getting stranded, does this sound serious or just a issue with a starter? Thanks Karl Also, we just bought this car with 150,000 miles on it and it looks great inside and out, so this is kinda throwing me a bit. Thanks for any help you guys can throw my way. CHeers!
