I have to pump the fuel pedal on my Montero sport to get it to start sometimes.

I would do a thorough cleaning of your throttle body/plate and Idle Air Controller, as well as your intake manifold, as much as you can do to it. I had the same issue on my Montero, and this cleared it up for me. Make sure after you clean it up, you disconnect the negative battery cable for a minute or so, reconnect it, and let it idle for 10 minutes or so, so it can relearn the idle with the adjustments.
