Could adding about 5 gallons of regular gas to a diesel cause a Fuel Lift Pump failure

Ran engine without knowing I'd added regular fuel. Took 7 days of driving to fail. Factory Bosch Fuel Lift pump had to be replaced, as well as fuel filter. Could the Regular Fuel have caused the problem.
