I've had a 1999 SLK230 for 20 years now n going on 138k miles. Twice I had to replace the switch that controls the top. On another occasion the top would open ok but would have trouble closing. Only 1 of my hydraulic pistons broke causing me to lose all the hydraulic fluid. I went on eBay pricing out a new piston($300), but then I seen a hydraulic pistons repair kit for $30! I only needed 1 fixed but the kit came w/ enough parts to do all 4. I had no idea they sold such a kit. I saved hundreds of dollars. I suggest checking the hydraulic system(for the top ofcorse) for any leaks. My rear right one was broke so my trunk was covered in fluid plus the reservoir tank was empty. Also check the reservoir tank to see if low or empty of fluid. Refill it and if it leaks out again then you know it's not the control switch that's bad, you just have to search where it's leaking from which should be easy to spot. Then buy the repair kit which I found for $30 and don't let a mechanic talk you into replacing a piston. The part alone is about $250-$350 plus labor. It definitely pays to do some research yourself. Plus the kit comes with a step-by-step instruction book if you want to do it yourself. Best of luck to you!!
Hello, the power top mechanism utilizes sensors and mechanisms that work in unison to lower and raise the top. There is clearly something wrong with one of those components - but we couldn't begin to speculate without hands on testing and troubleshooting unfortunately.
