Shifter

Most cars have a safety device that will prevent you from moving the shift lever out of park unless the footbrake is applied. This will then activate a solenoid. You may have a bad brake switch, solenoid or cable is bad or two many coffees and cokes have spilled and messed up the shifter. First check the brake lights to see if they work. If yes, then listen for a clicking sound by the shifter when you step on the brake. If no sound, you can either attempt to take the center consol apart of find a good shop. Check the BBB for ratings. Seek out a certified shop such as AAA, ASCCA or ATRA to name a few.
